What’s in a Name?

As we move forward with our redevelopment plans we wondered whether or not we should give the Arts Guild a new name…

What do you think?

I think suitable ideas for the new name for the Greenock theatre would be the Waterfront or the Riverside or the Customhouse – these may seem plain or obvious but I think people might tend to describe it by its location even if it has another name, “You know, the riverside theatre”.

Alternatively, it could be named after a particular person. For example, a man with a considerable theatre and arts pedigree whose work has often had Greenock connections even when produced for places well away fro Greenock is playwright / director / film producer and director Bill Bryden.

I think as the ~Arts Guild is actually undergoing a re-birth it should be called THE PHOENIX THEATRE or THE GREENOCK PHOENIX

I think the new theatre should be called the Clydeside Theatre as its at side of the River Clyde hence the name.

I think it is wonderful that we finally have something new and modern that will bring lots of pleasure to our community and others. Something for Greenockians to be proud of.

I suggest “The Greenock Theatre of Arts”.

I think it should be called the oak theatre or the victoria theatre if its being built at victoria harbour, or the james watt theatre.

I believe the new building could be named “The Harbour Lights Arts Guild”. Who knows, maybe the next new name for that area will be “The Harbour Lights Arts Guild & Marina”.

I would agree with the above comments regarding what people would tend to do when describing the new theatre

I also thought on ‘The Riverside’ but we already have the Riverside Homes based in Greenock which might cause some confusion

May I suggest ‘The Harbourside Theatre’ which would be in keeping not only in the new theatres location but also with Greenock’s maritime links

What’s wrong with simply calling it the “New Arts Guild Theatre”? It would be a shame to lose the link back to the original place which is close to the hearts of many Greenockians!

Given that the new complex is designed to attract a wide range of users and that it is designed to be bright and open – I suggest that the building is named The Beacon Arts Centre.

My suggestions for the renaming of the new Arts Guild Theatre.

First choice = Inverclyde Harbour Theatre.
Second choice = Inverclyde Heritage Theatre.
    Third choice =

    ^^^^^^
Forgot to add my third choice.

Third choice = The Quay Theatre.

Do not keep the Arts Guild Theatre name because it seems very old fashioned and stuffy and stuck in the past. It’s a new era for the theatre so it must get a new name to appeal to a new generation of theatre-goers.
    Good luck.

I just thought to offer another name for the new theatre. Why not the “Victoria Arts Guild” .This name would suit the environment the ne building is being built in.

    Two suggestions;

    1. “Theatre 46″ (to acknowledge the year the Arts Guild was estabished)

    2. “The Q Theatre” (abbreviation of Theatre on the Quay)
